Reading All Around

The second grade students have been taking part in a variety of reading activities throughout their day!

Daily Five: You will hear your child using language like read to self, read to someone, work on writing, word work, and listen to reading. These are all components of the Daily Five reading system. The students are given the freedom and responsibility to choose the areas of reading and writing they would like to work on.

Guided Reading: This goes hand and hand with the Daily Five. During guided reading, students read with the teacher in a small group to work on comprehension, fluency, accuracy, and other skills. While the teacher is meeting with the group, the other students are working on reading, writing, and spelling activities.

Reading Series: We will use the Wonders reading series this year.  Students are learning new strategies for reading, new vocabulary words, and how to do close readings.  We will learn and experience a lot this year as we explore the reading series. There are five weeks in each unit. The sixth week will be spent taking the unit reading tests to assess the skills learned in the unit.
